Online spaces are great for building communities and relationships, but also cause harm
At Inclusive Aotearoa Collective Tāhono, we offer tailor-made workshops on online harm and its threats to communities and the social fabric of Aotearoa.
People are often not aware of the amount of organisation and resources that go into disrupting online spaces. We want to make the hidden actors and the techniques they use more visible to our communities so that we can work together to take action.
Online harm can be recognised as many things, including:
- Threats to personal and community safety
- Harm to health and well-being
- Dehumanisation, discrimination and silencing
- Invasion of privacy
- Deception and manipulation

Whakakotiti: Un/Real
A one-hour workshop offering basic information on online behaviors that are deliberately designed to cause online harm.
Online content and culture can distort the understanding of what is real and unreal. While the internet can be perceived as an invisible part of everyday life, its infrastructure and the impacts caused by online harm are all rooted in the physical world—in our homes, neighbourhoods, and communities.
Un/Real: Whakakotiti is our workshop designed to address the impacts of online spaces and technologies on communities already struggling with racism and disinformation.
What to expect:
- This basic session gives information on online behaviours deliberately designed to cause online harm;
- We take participants through a case study to show the practical impacts of this behaviour;
- Finally, we discuss potential solutions and help people identify how to work together to make a difference.
This session is for those who want to gain a basic understanding of what is behind some of the disturbing things they see in online spaces.
