Media
Media and social media were recognised as sources of power and influence by participants, especially regarding the sharing of fake news and dangerous stereotypes. However, media could also facilitate inclusion and belonging by representing and focusing more on the voices of those marginalised in society. Participants shared that the media and social media should be accountable for reporting biased news that has not been fact-checked.
Our media plays a large role in perpetrating negative stereotypes and racist hateful messaging of "others", unsure of how you change this other than insisting on more honest, respectful, understanding journalists and organisations. The Māori news networks seem to be far more respectful and understanding than mainstream.

Media needs to tell the stories of what’s happening in our society.

Media no longer has any interest in reporting the truth. They fired all the people doing fact-checking. In lockdown, we’ve seen journalists being laid off in the thousands, and it will be the [fact-checkers] who are lost.

[xxx] When thinking about what needs to change, and considering all factors, including media, we can think about what holds attention and what the ethics are. [xxx] A person who spends an hour on their phone each day, Facebook earns an average of $500 a day from each person. That’s an enormous amount of money when considering that 2.2.b people use Facebook. [xxx]: Media is critical. In New Zealand in particular there is terrible media [xxx] Yes, so you end up going to other places for media. [xxx]

Social media in some aspects, because there is cultural awareness but it also misinforms. It creates questions and uncertainty. Meeting a person face to face, you get their wairua, they start to connect. Hey they are people, they may look different to me but they are human. You don’t get that from social media.

Our perspective of media, we don’t need them to represent. They gain a few minutes of sympathy, people think about it for 5 minutes then people go back to normal lives. There’s no point in reflecting on issues. It is a serious and uncomfortable issue , or what is the point. The way we’ve done it, with tik tok, quick information in a way people are comfortable with digesting, especially with youth who are not comfortable with politics. A lot of people are stripped away, they don’t exercise democratic rights, these issues will fall in our head down the line.

Yeah it’s not about what you bring to it, it’s about you, it’s about positive images, I’m not going to go there and defend a party line because there’s nothing to defend, we’ve got a podcast because the media loves to tell our sad stories, not so much happy stories.

A common issue is [x]’s lack of understanding around Islamic people. He does a lot of online stuff. He watches a lot of certain types of online material. I would say it’s almost radical viewpoints. His sweeping generalisations of those things. One way I’ve suggested is looking at other material. We’re watching a justice series from Harvard University, look at how you examine your view points. It leads you through. Looking at the types of material people view. Souxsie Wilde’s article is about home.

Technology
Technology has enabled many people to connect more. At the same time, it has created tensions between online and real-life interactions and isolated people who can’t afford technology or regular wifi. There needs to be better education on the risks and benefits of technology, privacy, online safety and balanced use. Also, improving access to technology and wifi could decrease isolation for many.
Digital technology won’t solve everything, but there are ways of making it easier for the general public to connect with those who can do actions; that can really make a difference.

It’s not about “you can’t say this or that”, it’s the way people are being censored on the Internet. You get banned off Twitter for saying the wrong thing just by an algorithm. There’s as many bots on reddit, Twitter etc than there are [real] people [ie users are 50% bots and 50% real people].

5G technology is to be used for this 4th industrial revolution, where everything will be tracked. Last vestiges of a free internet and our free speech will increasingly be eroded. If you say anything about any of this [ie about 5G, tracing], you’ll be called an anti-science person. There’s so many ways that people are being divided. Because of the power that Google and corporations have over the public forum that people don’t have free speech any more in very valid ways.

Families I went into on those benefits, I went into had limited benefits but didn’t have internet. But they get money for lunch. It’s what they chose I guess or knowing the best decisions to make.

I think one of the things we need is TIME. I think we need to give people time. I’m not a social media person, I’m quite a [technology] dinosaur, and in a mixed generational group, sometimes I have a hard time connecting, finding that common thing.

One of the interesting things I know about kids and India on social media. If we look at how kids are connected to social media, and every time, you get a snapchat, a instagram, a Facebook, you open it and get endorphins and so you are drawn back to it. It’s addiction. It’s preventing the connection to people.

A home should have access to Wi-Fi, everything in the world comes through to a computer or phone. Lots of homes don’t have Wi-Fi. Free Wi-Fi for everyone, it’s my dream world.

Technology has given us an alternative life, so to bring back to this philosophy is really important. When something goes wrong, that the whole society feels ashamed, when we cultivate that [we will have belonging]. The whole education system has to change, where they are able to be accountable to each other. I can’t believe that kids are having mobile phones.
